Innovative System Employs Simultaneous Source and Load Power Measurements to Identify and Locate Distribution Impedance Problems New ZM100 Distribution Analysis System offers unique capabilities in both energy management and power quality studies |
Baltimore, Md.-October 25, 2005-Z Meters, Inc., a newly formed company launched by the former senior management of Reliable Power Meters, Inc. (RPM), today unveiled its flagship product, the ZM100 Distribution Analysis System here at PowerSystems World 2005. The ZM100 utilizes time-synchronized, multipoint measurement and correlation techniques to characterize the impedance of the distribution system in industrial, commercial or medical facilities.
Problems in the distribution system are frequently the root cause of poor power quality and excess energy consumption. The ZM100 system can quickly identify and localize a host of conditions that can lead to voltage anomalies and/or power loss including: loose wires, carbonized contacts, undersized transformers, harmonic loads, parallel loads and non-linear impedances.
According to Bob Moore, president and CEO of Z Meters, "Typical power quality and energy monitoring instruments such as those we developed at BMI and RPM provide data on what events are occurring and when they occurred. The ZM100 system is designed to tell us why and where the abnormal conditions exist in the distribution system that set the stage for those events to take place."
The ZM100 system consists of two or more ZM100 Distribution Analyzers, each connected to a salient point in the facility's electrical distribution system. Each of these devices is equipped to make time-synchronized and highly accurate measurements of voltages and currents for all phases and neutral. Measurements are made and data are gathered over a time period that characterizes the range of operating conditions that typically exist in the facility. The data is then communicated to a PC using Bluetooth wireless communications. The ZM100 Windows-based software performs a range of calculations and correlations resulting in a characterization of the distribution system's impedance (both at line frequency and harmonics). Using the resultant characterization, distribution impedance abnormalities can be readily identified and necessary corrective measures can be prescribed.
